Earlier this week it was Valentine's Day: A day many associate with chocolate, roses and romance. And while for some couples this was certainly the case, it turns out Feb. 14 also falls in the same month that is often associated with a spike in divorce filings.

When looking at why February tends to see this spike, Valentine's Day may even have something to do with it. Some may already be on the fence with their marriage, and then seeing other couples' affection points out what their marriage is lacking, and pushes some to finally just file.

Another reason why divorce sees a spike this month also may have something to do with the time that has passed since the holidays. The reasoning behind this is that many couples are kept constantly busy and feel a sense of togetherness around the holidays. However, by January those warm and fuzzy feelings can turn to loneliness and dejection, which by February can lead to starting the process of divorce.

Of course, these are also not the only two reasons that people decide to file in February -- or really any time of the year. But, remember that regardless of what pushes spouses to decide to end marriages, they are hardly alone, as 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce.

However, even though divorce is quite common, keep in mind that divorce can still be quite confusing and include many different components, like property division and spousal support -- and if the couple has children -- custody and child support. Because of this, it's important to talk with a family law attorney to make sure that a fair divorce settlement is reached.
